Abstract
Photochemistry of adsorbed molecules provides a new perspective into our understanding of the interaction of molecules with surfaces and elementary reactions. The photochemical processes which can occur are photodesorption, photodissociation, and photoreaction of the adsorbed molecules. These photo-induced processes have been observed for a range of diatomic and polyatomic molecules on metal, semimetal, semiconductor, and insulator surfaces. Surface photochemistry is selective and can proceed at low temperatures. Although the underlying mechanisms are not completely understood, an increasing number of cross sections have been determined, allowing the beginning of a general understanding of the photo-induced process. The current status of surface photochemistry is summarized in this paper, with the emphasis placed on the effects arising from coadsorbed atoms and molecules.
