Innovationen als Ergebnis stochastischer Optimierung

Zusammenfassung

Innovationen werden als Ergebnis stochastischer Optimierung dargestellt. Während Nachfragewachstum Innovationen begünstigt, wird die Innovationstätigkeit durch Ungewißheit und das daraus resultiertende Risiko gehemmt. Diese theoretisch abgeleiteten Schlußfolgerungen werden durch empirische Evidenz aus der verarbeitenden Industrie der Bundesrepublik Deutschland gestützt. Im Modell ist der Einfluß des Wettbewerbs komplexer Natur. Einerseits Ubt Monopolmacht einen nachteiligen Einfluß auf die Innovationstätigkeit aus, andererseits jedoch kann Rivalität in Forschung und Entwicklung die Risiken erhöhen und dadurch die Innovationsrate vermindert.

Abstract

Innovations are modelled as resulting from stochastic optimization. Whereas growth of demand favours innovations uncertainty and the ensuing risks are shown to inhibit innovative activity. These theoretical conclusions are corroborated by empirical evidence pertaining to manufacturing industry in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the model the influence of competition is of complex nature. On one hand monopoly power exerts an unfavourable influence on innovative activity. On the other hand, rivalry in research and development may give rise to increased risks and may thus reduce the rate of innovations.
