Abstract
Most of the theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on innovative behaviour ignores firmspecific differences in technology, demand perspectives and market strategies. Starting from a simple competitive fringe model we allow for three distinct behavioural patterns: quantity Cournot behaviour, the constant market share strategy and marginal cost pricing. The model enables us to derive quasi-conditional expenditure functions for product and process innovations for different strategies.
Using sample information on market strategies of individual firms we obtain parameter estimates from a three step minimum chi-square method that accounts for the censored character of the dependent variables and the endogenity of the market strategy. The results confirm our view that differences in market strategies should not be neglected if appropriate sample separation information is available.
