Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 121))

Abstract

There is no doubt about the severe undertreatment of cancer pain worldwide. Every day 3.5 million people are suffering from cancer pain (WHO 1986). This remains true even though treatment is so easy and effective with non-narcotic analgesics and opioids (Twycross and Lack 1983). Just with these drugs, pain relief can be achieved in as many as 90% of our patients. But opioids are not used enough in chronic pain treatment. The reasons for this deficit are the lack of systematic teaching, lack of curricula for pain treatment, lack of awareness of the problem, fear of side effects from the treatment, prejudices, and legislative restrictions.
