Optimizing Palliative Nursing Skills by Education
Over the last 20 years there has been an increasing emphasis on the role of education in preparing health care professionals to work in the field of palliative care. As a result, a huge variety of educational initiatives have come into being. For example, it is estimated that in the United States alone, more than 10 000 courses and seminars are held every year in relation to dying and death (Eddy and Alles 1983). Similarly a recent study in the United Kingdom revealed that all schools and colleges of nursing now include teaching on palliative care in basic and continuing education programmes (RCN, in press).
