Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 121))

Abstract

The surgical implantation of a catheter, establishing a connection between a subcutaneous reservoir and a large vein or the hepatic artery, has become a routine modality for long-term chemotherapy in cancer patients. The development of programmable pumps linked to cassettes containing 50–100 ml of the drug has enabled patients to receive outpatient instead of inpatient treatment [1].
