Creep and Settlement of Ice Structures — A Case History

Abstract

During the late winter of 1986, BP Canada Inc. drilled three shallow, stratigraphic wells in the Cold Lake region of northern Alberta, Canada. The wells were related to the confirmation of heavy oil deposits beneath the bottom of a local lake called Marguerite Lake near BP’s Wolf Lake development. The three wells were about 600 m deep and required approximately 3 days to drill. Light, truck mounted drilling rigs, weighing in total about 130 tonnes, are usually adequate to drill this type of hole.
