Abstract
Continuous liquid-liquid partition methods not employing any solid support matrix are generally termed countercurrent chromatography (CCC). Consequently, all complications arising from the use of such solid supports, including tailing of solute peaks, adsorptive sample loss, deactivation, contamination, etc. are eliminated. Therefore CCC provides a valuable complementary method to adsorption chromatography, especially for the fractionation of complex mixtures of natural products. CCC techniques allow a mild isolation of natural products, and their significance as phytochemical methods is continuously increasing.
