Abstract
Acquisition of engineering knowledge is a major problem in development of expert systems, in particular those in the field of structural engineering. In practical applications, the generic theoretical concepts must be usually modified and/or combined with the ad hoc developed methods, allowing to resolve the application specific problems. This has been confirmed by the MPA experience with and inquiry involving over 40 structural engineering experts. The inquiry has been used as a way of elicitation of engineering knowledge necessary for the development of the expert systems in the domain of structural analysis, at the first place for the expert system prototype for leak-before-break analysis. The results of the inquiry and the experiences gathered during their elaboration are shown in the paper.
