Abstract
The presence of phenotypic variants or mutants among regenerated plants has been documented since the first successful regeneration of plants from rice tissue cultures, e.g., morphological variants from seed callus (Nishi et al. 1968), albino (Niizeki and Oono 1968; Harn and Hwang 1970), and polyploids (Nishi and Mitsuoka 1969; Niizeki and Oono 1971) from pollen callus. Mutations that altered heading date, plant height, and panicle number were frequently observed in plants regenerated from anther cultures of rice (Oono 1975). However, the occurrence of these mutations has not been an obstacle to developing new varieties by the haploid breeding method using anther culture (Anonymous 1976; Yin et al. 1976).
