Abstract
Within the Variscan orogenic belt, in the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula, the West Asturian-Leonese Zone (WALZ) is the transition zone between the foreland areas, represented by the Cantabrian Zone, and the more internal zones placed westwards (Central Iberian Zone). The zone was defined by Lotze (1945) as an arcuate band with the following main characteristics: existence of a very thick and nearly continuous succession ranging from the Upper Proterozoic to the Devonian, presence of a very regular train of folds with E and NE vergence, and reduced extension of the granitic massifs.
