Abstract

The South Portuguese Zone (SPZ) represents the southern branch of the Iberian Variscides. For a long time, geological studies in this zone were focused mostly on its mid-part, the so-called Iberian Pyrite Belt, which is the locus of impressive reserves in polymetallic massive sulphides. It was only during the last two decades that the areas north and south of the Pyrite Belt attracted more attention. The existing knowledge resulted from persistent work carried out by geologists from private companies and State institutions.
