Distribution and Characteristics of the Hercynian Metamorphism

  • Chapter
Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia

Part of the book series: IGCP-Project 233 ((IGCP 233))

Abstract

Among the three zones into which the northwestern sector of the Hesperian Massif has been divided (Lotze and 1945; Julivert et al. 1972), the Cantabrian Zone (CZ) and the West Asturian-Leonese Zone (WALZ) clearly differ from the Central Iberian Zone (CIZ) in the scarcity of plutonism and in the absence or low grade of metamorphism, although the westernmost part of the WALZ, in the Dome of Lugo area, shows some similitudes with the CIZ in metamorphic and plutonic aspects.
