Die Ausbreitung von Lichtwellen in Lichtwellenleitern wird einerseits durch die Materialeigenschaften der Gläser beeinflußt, aus denen der Lichtwellenleiter aufgebaut ist, andererseits durch die geometrische Form des Lichtwellenleiters und durch sein Brechzahlprofil.
