Passive Smoking as a Low Level Carcinogen: Epidemiologic Risk Assessment

Abstract

To the extent that mainstream smoke (MS) is a potent carcinogen and sidestream smoke (SS) only quantitatively different from MS, an excess lung cancer risk from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) should be expected. Nevertheless, two important questions remain. First, is the excess risk expected from long-term exposure to ETS large enough to be empirically demonstrable with existing epidemiologic techniques? Second, are the epidemiologic data supportive of, rather than compatible with, an etiologic role of passive smoking in lung carcinogenesis [1-61]?
