Extended Defects in Superconducting Oxides: High-Resolution Electron Microscopy

Abstract

Oxygen-deficient perovskite-type structure, ion ordering and intergrowth of perovskite with rock-salt-type layers are keywords for the mechanisms, described in Chaps.2 and 5 that generate the high-Tc superconductor structures. They are known by solid-state chemists to favor nonstoichiometric features. The phenomena thus generated often play a prominent role in the material properties and there are numerous examples that illustrate their influence on the physical (electron transport, magnetism) as well as the chemical properties. An understanding of the relationships between properties and structure thus needs a good knowledge of the crystalline state. In such an investigation, High-Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM) is obviously an essential tool, since it achieves direct imaging of the complex features. It should be emphasized, however, that this attractive technique needs to be used carefully, both experimentally (where the required conditions are perfectly defined [6.1]) and in the interpretation.
