Bismuth, Thallium and Lead Superconducting Cuprates

Abstract

The possibility of replacing the yttrium ions in YBa2Cu3O7 by almost any trivalent lanthanide without producing any change of the critical temperature, even when the lanthanide is a magnetic cation, has encouraged the investigation of the related quaternary oxides involving copper, an alkaline earth element and a trivalent element other than a rare earth. Two families were discovered successively: the bismuth copper oxides and the thallium copper oxides. Some time later, the investigation of lead cuprates allowed new superconductors to be synthesized. The crystal chemistry of these systems has not yet been investigated in an exhaustive way, so that many phases, superconducting or not, remain to be isolated. Thus, this chapter will focus on the structure of the superconducting phases that have been isolated, and in particular on their electron transport properties.
