Abstract

Newtonian mechanics and Maxwell’s theory of the electromagnetic (EM) field were the pillars of physics until the end of the nineteenth century. Subsequently however, a series of phenomena were discovered which were totally incomprehensible within the context of those theories. Their explanation resulted in a combination of new hypotheses which, over the years, crystallized into what now constitutes quantum mechanics (QM). In this chapter we will discuss some of these phenomena, with the aim of developing a feeling for the fundamental concepts of QM.
