Carcinoid Tumors

  • Jean-Noël Bruneton

Rare lesions that represent 1.5% of all gastrointestinal tumors (Kowlessar 1973), carcinoids are unusual in several ways:
  • Their malignant predisposition varies as a function of their anatomic site.

  • They are classified as amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) neoplasms.

  • A relationship exists between the clinical carcinoid syndrome and the presence of hepatic metastases.

  • Laboratory tests are important for diagnosis [serotoninemia, increased urinary excretion of 5-hydroxy-indolacetic acid (5-HIAA)].

  • A malignant carcinoid does not invariably have a poor prognosis.
