Abstract

Although the incidence of gastric cancer has decreased considerably in most industrialized nations, these tumors remain a serious problem because they are often not diagnosed until an advanced stage. Furthermore, therapeutic progress has not yet succeeded in significantly improving patient survival. Imaging studies play a less important role for gastric adenocarcinoma than for other gastric pathologies or adenocarcinoma in other localizations because disease staging requires surgery (Halvorsen and Thompson 1987). Cancer of the cardia has benefited more from evaluation by modern imaging techniques than disease in other portions of the stomach, and is thus dealt with separately.
