Abstract

A study on streamwise velocity fluctuations in developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed, with special reference to the probabilty distribution of the time derivative ∂u/∂t. This distribution is asymmetric in the sense that events of large positive ∂u/∂t occur more often than those of large negative ∂u/∂t. The events with large positive ∂u/∂t are regarded to be important for the transfer of mean flow energy into turbulence.
