Morphology and Functional Activity of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 118))

Abstract

As components of the neuroendocrine cell system the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) endocrine cells have a number of varied proteins in common. The best known of these specific components are neuron-specific enolase (NSE), chromogranins A, B and C, protein gene product 9.5, synaptophysin and Leu 7 (Bishop et al. 1988; Martin and Maung 1987). These markers and the specific neuroendocrine cell products, i.e. regulatory peptides, can be immunostained to define the nature of the cells. The tumours originating from these cells are rare, but by reproducing many of the morphological and functional features of their cell(s) of origin they reveal a distinct morphology and may give rise to a number of well-defined syndromes.
