Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Extensive superficial injuries were usually observed in physicians and their staff involved in the application of X-rays or radium during the first decades of this century. It was common practice to hold the barium platinum cyanide screen with one hand close to the tube while the other was placed between screen and tube to control the functioning of the equipment and the X-ray intensity. Such long-term continuous irradiation of the skin frequently caused chronic radiation dermatitis and X-ray ulcers. Furthermore, extensive pigmentations occurred on the forearms, face, and breast (Marcuse 1896; Flaskamp 1930; Beck et al. 1959).
