Abstract

The catchment area of a stream or river, i.e., the drainage basin — not necessarily the area of precipitation — is not a level plane. It is rather defined as “the area, measured in horizontal projection, from which the water flows to a certain location” (DIN 4049), i.e., as a portion of the earth’s surface displaying a declivity to a certain point. The difference between the true surface area in the field and its projection over a map can be considerable and increases with growing angles of inclination.
