Abstract

A prospective inventory study was recently performed to investigate rates of colonization and subsequent infection and pathogenesis of infection in surgical neonates (page 57). The infection rate in the group was 35%, the main sites being superficial and wound infections. In all cases, infection was endogenous, and infection was preceded by colonization of the digestive tract.
