Abstract

The depressed erythropoiesis of uremic anemia is consequent to the reduced proliferation and differentiation of erythroid stem cells, which are due to the deficient production of erythropoietin (EPO) by the kidney [1–3]. This is confirmed by the very recent results concerning recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) use in uremic dialysis patients, which showed that intravenous administration of this hormone leads to a significant improvement in erythropoiesis [4–6].
