Abstract
Prosthetic devices have been increasingly used during the last 40 years. These devices are inserted temporary (i.e. catheters) or permanently, such as prosthetic heart valves, vascular grafts, osteosynthesis-material, artificial joints etc. Patients in surgical intensive care units have often new implants which are endangered either by wound infection or by bacteremia. In this paper the pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, prophylaxis, and treatment of infections on implants will be discussed. The problem of catheter-related infections will not be presented in this short review.
