Abstract

Anatomy Initially appearing as a dilatation of the digestive tube by the 4th week of embryonic life, the stomach begins to take on its more familiar position by the 10th week. The ventral mesogastrium at that point contributes to forming the lesser omentum, and the dorsal mesogastrium, the greater omentum. Deriving its name from the Greek, “stomachos.” meaning “opening,” the stomach is the first intra-abdominal portion of the digestive tract and lies in the left upper quadrant, extending medially to the midline but with a caudal margin sometimes below the level of the umbilicus. The proximal and distal ends of the stomach are fixed by the cardia, 1 to 2 cm below the diaphragmatic hiatus, and by the duodenum, which becomes retroperitoneal just distal to the pylorus.
