Abstract

Radiology has many roles to play in evaluating patients with malignancies of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These include diagnosis, staging, assessment of treatment response, detection of recurrence and complications as well as, recently, intervention in the management of complications and the palliation of disease. Detection of tumors of the hollow viscera is the province of barium examinations and endoscopy. Both modalities have advantages and disadvantages and in many respects are complementary. Detection of cancers of the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas is generally by ultrasound and/ or computed tomography (Cn scanning as well as by endoscopic cholangiopancreatography and transhepatic cholangiography. Diagnosis is made by histologic analysis. Biopsies are obtained endoscopically of the hollow viscera and percutaneously of solid organ tumors, using radiologic guidance (CT, ultrasound, fluoroscopy). Percutaneous biopsy has proved to be a safe reliable procedure in many large series (FERRUCCI etal. 1980; HARTER etal . 1983; BERNARDINO 1984).
