Abstract

The anal canal is the terminal portion of the large intestine. The anatomic anal canal is defined as the distance between the dentate line and the anal verge; the surgical anal canal is defined as the dis- tance between the anorectal ring and the anal verge (Goligher 1984 a) (Fig. 1). The anorectal ring is a palpable fibromuscular structure which is com-posed of the upper fibers of the internal sphincter (Goligher 1984 a). The surgical anal canal on aver- age measures 4.2 cm in length (range 3-5.3 cm) and the anatomic canal has an average length of 2.1 cm (range 1.0-3.8 cm) (Nivatvongs et al. 1981). The canal is slightly longer in males as compared to fe-males.
