Abstract
The Krebsatlas der Bundesrepublik Deutschland — Atlas of Cancer Mortality in the Federal Republic of Germany (Becker et al. 1984) constitutes a contribution to the international endeavors to present cartographically the “cancer landscape” of a certain region. Cancer atlases, mostly based on routinely collected official mortality figures, have - since the middle of the 1970s — appeared, among other countries, in Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United States. More recently, some atlases of cancer incidence have also been published, e.g., in Finland, Norway, Scotland, and the USSR. Other papers in this volume will report on some of these atlases.
