Abstract
Since the discovery of pathogenic variability within the formae speciales of each of the three wheat rusts, race surveys have been carried out in the major wheat growing areas of the world. Initially their major purpose was descriptive — to determine the range of variability within each of the wheat rusts. In the process they provided pure isolates for use in a variety of studies, genetics, breeding, pathology, and physiology.
