Abstract
In this first chapter on variables observed during voluntary diving my attention will be focused mainly on: (1) the techniques used to study heart rate, (2) the level of change compared to resting at the surface, (3) some comparisons with forced submersion experiments, and (4) activity. My goal is to collate, review, and bring some order to the desultory reports on this subject. I will limit the discussion of neurological control to a few reports necessary to help give a general concept of the reflexive aspects of this response. Comprehensive reviews of this subject are available (Butler 1982 a; Butler and Jones 1982; Eisner and Gooden 1983).
