Abstract
Measurements of the viscosity of liquids are of great importance in determining the internal structure of these liquids as well as in the control of industrial processes, e.g. during the fabrication of oils, resins or biological liquids. To this end, only shear horizontal (SH) bulk ultrasonic waves have been employed. For example, in the method proposed by Mason [1] one can determine the shear impedance Z l of a liquid from the measured modulus and phase of the reflection coefficient of the volume wave at the solid-liquid interface. Due to a big difference between the impedances of the solid and liquid, the volume wave method is of low sensitivity.
