Abstract

The hypopharynx is that portion of the pharynx which envelops the larynx and lies lateral and posterior to the larynx. It extends from the level of the hyoid bone superiorly to the lower border of the cricoid cartilage inferiorly. (Fig. 9-1) It consists of the pyriform sinus, the posterior pharyngeal wall and the post-cricoid region. The posterior pharyngeal wall of the hypopharynx is contiguous with the oropharyngeal walls. Most authors analyze the oropharyngeal wall and the hypopharyngeal wall tumors together. Pyrifom sinus cancers form the majority of hypopharyngeal cancers. The incidence of post-cricoid tumors varies in different countries and is quite uncommon in the United States.
