Abstract
The incidence of clinically positive cervical neck nodes at the time of presentation varies both with the primary site and the patient population seen at a given institution. Patients from higher socioeconomic strata tend in general to present with earlier stage disease while institutions primarily drawing patients from lower socioeconomic strata tend to see positive nodes more frequently when the patients ultimately seek medical attention. Table 5-1 shows a representative sampling of the incidence of positive nodes at the time of presentation for the various primary sites from selected institutions. Fletcher et al. (1980) specifically discuss the frequency with which particular nodal groups are involved for the various primary sites and this information will also be given in the site-specific chapters later in this book. This chapter is intended to present a concise overview of the problem and to discuss some general principles of treatment.
