Abstract
The development of a research strategy investigating new approaches to the treatment of advanced head and neck cancers requires an extensive and complete data base. One must know the rate and pattern of distant metastasis and local treatment failure (how standard treatment fails) before one can develop new treatments. In order to develop such a data base, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) established a prospective registry for head and neck cancer in 1977. Between February 1977 and April 1980, the following information was collected on all head and neck cancers treated at RTOG institutions: primary tumor site, T-stage, N-stage, M-stage, age, sex, Karnofsky performance score, tumor histology, tumor differentiation, extent of infiltration, treatment delivery, and outcome. All patients were staged according to the 1976 TNM staging system of the American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting. 2066 cases were entered into the registry. 992 of these had locally advanced inoperable disease treated by radiation therapy alone. The sites of treatment failure, including distant metastatic rates, were established for that group of patients.
