Tumors of the Major and Minor Salivary Glands

Radiation Therapy of Head and Neck Cancer

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Primary salivary gland tumors account for approximately 7% of all head and neck malignancies and less than 3% of all human tumors. The overall incidence in the general population is about 1.5/100,000. There do not appear to be any predisposing factors which can be identified, except for radiation induced neoplasms, such as those reported in the Hiroshima – Nagasaki survivors by Belsky e t al. (1972), Takeichi et al. (1983), and Shorefreedman et al. (1983). As a general rule, benign tumors tend to occur in younger patients and malignant tumors in the older age group. There is generally no sexual predilection except in the cases of Warthin’s tumor, which is about 5 times more frequent in men as reported by Dorn & Cutler (1959).

This investigation was supported in part by Core Grants CA6294 and CA16672 awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
