Fermi Surface Effects in Atom and Molecule Surface Scattering

This paper deals with various kinds of Fermi surface effects in the scattering of atoms and molecules from metal surfaces. At low projectile velocities, the one-body potential of the projectile leads to a coupling to electron-hole pairs which is infra-red singular, as first pointed out by Muller-Hartman et al. [1]. In practice, this phenomenon is hard to observe because the center of mass degree of freedom of atoms or molecules scattering from surfaces is so strongly coupled to the phonon system; inelastic effects are dominated by phonons and electron-hole pair- excitation is secondary.
