Abstract

Status asthmaticus is defined as severe bronchial obstruction refractory to the “usual treatment”. This description is by definition somewhat arbitrary in that it lacks any objective criteria and that “usual treatment” may differ from center to center. Therefore, it would be more appropriate to discuss the severe asthmatic in whom spirometry demonstrates marked obstruction with an FEV1 of less than 1 liter and often of less than 700 cc.
