Leukocytes-mediated Pulmonary Injury
Advances in the care of patients after trauma or emergency surgical interventions have improved survival. The use of intensive care facilities such as mechanical ventilatory assistance, pharmacological hemodynamic support, parenteral nutrition, dialysis and hemofiltration, have permitted a better control of the response to this acute physiologic insult. However, in spite of these improved results the number of deaths from progressive, sequential and multiple organ failure (MOF) has increased [1–3].
