Abstract

What is the precise relation between the presence of Campylobacter pylori in the mucus gel on the surface of the gastric mucosa and the simultaneous occurrence of various disease entities such as active chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease of the stomach or duodenum, or gastric carcinoma? Among the many publications following the renewed interest in bacteria in the stomach, several focussed on their relation to active chronic gastritis [1–4] and benign peptic ulcer disease [5, 6]. It barely needs further clarification that a relation with these disease entities exists; a relation with gastric carcinoma has so far not been documented.
