Abstract

A considerable amount of Raman work has been done on polyacetylene. In particular, the C-C and C=C modes of trans-(CH)x have attracted experimental and theoretical Raman investigations to this material because of their unusual resonance behaviour (Fig. 1). However, most of the work has been done on the unoriented material and only little attention has been paid to the Raman intensities themselves and their dependence on the excitation energy /1-3/, although much information can be obtained from such measurements. With the success in preparing fully oriented polyacetylene /4/ a great improvement in the knowledge of the Raman properties is expected. First Raman spectra of such highly oriented samples are shown in /5/, and first quantitative measurements are reported in /3/. In this contribution we present a detailed quantitative Raman analysis performed on highly oriented trans-polyacetylene in several polarization directions and with several laser excitations.
