Copolymerization of ethylene and 1-olefins with Ziegler catalysts under high pressure
After the polymerization of ethylene with Ziegler-type catalysts has been investigated under high pressure the performance of the catalyst was tested in the copolymerization with 1-olefins. The heterogenous titanium catalyst was used together with tetra-iso-butyl dialuminoxane as cocatalyst. The polymerization experiments were performed batchwise in an autoclave reactor of 100 ml capacity at pressures of 1000 and 1500 bar, temperatures between 150 and 230°C and a residence time of 2 minutes. 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene and 1-decene were the comonomers. Their concentration in the feed was increased up to 20 mol %.
From the results of the tests the conversion and the productivity were determined. The polymers yielded were analyzed for their composition. Besides density and average molecular weight the molecular weight distribution was measured. Furthermore the reactivity ratios were determined from amount of comonomer incorporated into the polymer and the composition of the feed.
