Abstract
High acetate production and low acetate utilization have been described as metabolic characteristics of malignant tumor metabolism (Bush 1953; Elliot and Greig 1937; Fredman and Graff 1958; Hepp et al. 1966; Katz et al. 1976; Pardee et al. 1959). These observations were made in the murine system. Hepp et al. (1966) described a disequilibrium between the acetate-activating and acetate-inactivating enzymes (acetate thiokinase and acetyl-coenzyme A deacylase respectively) and demonstrated that the inactivation was more pronounced.
