Application of Hyperthermia in the Treatment of Cancer

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 107))

Abstract

Thermometry in local hyperthermia treatment still presents problems (Chan et al. 1984). Thermal dosimetry should be developed such that the temperature distribution within the heated volume can be predicted (Cosset et al. 1985). At present the method of choice for temperature monitoring is direct measurement of the tissue temperature by invasive techniques (Nilsson et al. 1982). In superficial tumors, temperature probes are easily introduced into the tumor at different positions or are placed on the skin (Marmor et al. 1979; Lindholm et al. 1982; Nilsson et al. 1982). In the case of deep-seated tumors, temperature is checked by means of catheters inserted into the vagina, the rectum and the bladder (Marchal et al. 1985).
