A Rapid in Vitro Assay for Predicting Thermochemosensitivity of Human Cancer: Comparison with Clonogenic Assay

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 107))

Abstract

A rapid in vitro assay based on morphological changes in the nucleus has, recently, been reported for predicting human cancer chemosensitivity (Tokita et al. 1986 a, b; Takamizawa et al. 1985). This method provides a realistic potential with regard to the following advantages: (1) We can apply it to any kind of tumors, including intestinal tumors contaminated with bacteria. Consequently, the proportion of tumors yielding sensitivity data is high. (2) The results are obtained within 4 h for alkylating agents and Vinca alkaloids, within 8 h for antibiotic and antimetabolic agents. (3) The assay can be done in a clinical laboratory on a regular basis because of its simplicity.
