Abstract
Public expenditure on health has grown very rapidly in absolute terms and as a proportion of gross national product (GNP) in Ireland. In 1970–1971 it amounted to 4.4% of GNP. By 1980 it had risen to 8.3%. Since then it has fallen back to around 8%. In addition to this high level of current expenditure, capital expenditure on new hospital construction was maintained at a high level over this period.
