Abstract

Aqueous micelles of ionic surfactantsadopt an anisodiametric shape at high ionic strength /1–9/. An increase of surfactant concentration induces a micellar growth, leading to very elongated aggregates for most surfactants with a single linear alkyl chain /10–12/. Several studies have shown that these giant micelles are flexible and behave in many respects like polymers /7–9/ /11/ /12/. For instance, the scattered intensity and the cooperative diffusion coefficient measured by elastic and quasi-elastic light scattering respectively, obey power laws of the surfactant volume fraction with exponents close to those predicted for semi-dilute polymer solutions /11/ /12/. These results indicate that the micelles form a transient network with lifetime much longer than the time scale probed in light scattering experiments.
