Abstract

Surgical discectomy is usually the treatment of choice for patients with lumbar radicular pain who have failed to respond to conservative treatment. Although surgical excision is generally followed by satisfactory results, complications and failures are well known and related to the dissection of the anatomic structures of the lumbar spine and to manipulation of the nerve roots. Fibrotic scarring in both the intradural and extradural spaces can be the result (1). In a scrupulously selected group of patients with lumbar radicular syndrome, chemonucleolysis can be a good alternative to surgical discectomy.
